Norway-based cargo ship company, MPC Container Ships, has placed an order with HJ Shipbuilding & Construction, based in South Korea, for two 5,500 TEU vessels capable of operating on methanol.

The newbuilds are intended to help MPC decarbonize its future fleet as the vessels are expected to be completed in 2024.

Constantin Baack, MPC’s CEO, said, “This transaction demonstrates the company’s capability to identify and execute transactions that are both accretive in terms of earnings and environmental footprint in line with upcoming decarbonization regulations. We will continue to execute on our distribution policy to shareholders whilst creating value by seizing selective growth opportunities as they arise.”
