United States Seizes Russian Yacht for First Time
On Monday, April 4th, authorities in Spain, acting on a request from the United States, confiscated a $90m yacht owned by a Russian oligarch, Viktor Vekselberg. The seizure is a result of sanctions against Vekselberg due to Russia’s attack of Ukraine.
Significant move as since the invasion of Ukraine in February, this is the first time the U.S. has seized a Russian oligarch’s asset.
“Together, with our international partners, we will do everything possible to hold accountable any individual whose criminal acts enable the Russian government to continue its unjust war,” said, Merrick B. Garland, the United States’ Attorney General.
