One-day record for migrants crossing English Channel hits 482
UK Home Office says crossing putting “lives at risk”.
The Home Office has announced that the number of migrants crossing the English Channel on Wednesday hit 482, a new one-day record. 21 small boats made the hazardous journey, bringing the tally to 435 crossings and 10,260 migrant arrivals this year.
A spokesman said the crossing were “putting lives at risk and added that “law enforcement agencies are dismantling the people smuggling gangs.
“Joint work with the French has seen a doubling of police officers on French beaches. And we are reforming the pull factors here at home”.
The Ministry of Defence earlier confirmed that it had to stop live firing practice at its Hythe range because of migrants landing on the beach.
