More than 100 days after she blocked the busiest waterway in the world and held up 12 per cent of the world’s maritime trade, the ultra large container ship, Ever Given, is finally underway.

The vessel’s release from arrest by the Suez Canal Authority (SCA) was timed to coincide with a ceremony to mark the conclusion of a compensation deal between the SCA and the ship’s owners, Shoei Kisen Kaisha.

“We would like to take a moment to specially acknowledge the Ever Given’s master, officers and crew who played a vital role in the safe refloating of the vessel and in her maintenance over the last months,” Shoei Kisen said.

“We would further like to acknowledge the families of the crew who have faced the uncertainty of not knowing when their loved ones would return.”

International Chamber of Shipping secretary general said he was proud of the way his association had helped with the ship’s release: “This is good news for the Egyptian authorities, good news for the owners and importantly good news for the crew.”
