Video: Ever Given finally arrives in UK’s Port of Felixstowe
Mammoth containership docks in Felixstowe over three months late
The ultra large container ship, Ever Given, has finally docked in the UK at the Port of Felixstowe, over three months later than scheduled.
The mammoth boxship hit the headlines in March when it went aground in the Suez Canal, blocking the vital trade route for six days and holding up 12% of the world’s maritime trade.
The grounding caused ripples throughout the global supply chain and prevented hundreds of other vessels from transiting the canal; the ensuing legal and salvage claims lodged against the vessel’s owners Shoei Kisen by the Suez Canal Authority took months to resolve.
In conjunction with the effects of the global pandemic, the biggest ship-jam in history has sent freight rates soaring, from £2,500 per container last year to £15,000 this year.
Analysts predict that record spot rates will continue well into next year and say continuing supply chain disruption could affect the availability of goods this Christmas.
