Faroe Islands launches hi-tech research vessel
FAMRI takes delivery of advanced marine research vessel from local builder.
The Faroe Marine Research Institute (FAMRI) has taken delivery of its new research vessel the Jakup Sverri from local builder MEST. She is named after the Faroe’s first marine biologist and former FAMRI director, Jakup Sverri Joensen.
The Bureau Veritas-classed vessel has a LOA of 54 metres, a beam of 13.6 metres and draft of 6.4 metres. The hull was built at Western Baltija Shipbuilding in Lithuania and then delivered for fit out to MEST.
The Jakup Sverri features seven decks and accommodation for 13 crew and 12 embarked scientists. She is equipped with a medical bay, meeting room and fitness area. Her state-of-the-art research facilities include pelagic and bottom trawls, acoustic sensors and sonar, and provisions for launching remotely operated vehicles.
