South Lebanon Maritime Dispute may finally be resolved
A long-standing maritime dispute between Israel and Lebanon may finally see a resolution.
Modern Diplomacy reports about the possibility of Israel and Lebanon resolving the long-standing maritime dispute between them straddling decades. Talks on this front were to commence in October 2020 but were deterred then. Presently, there are reports about a framework being worked out under the watchful eyes of the UN. On its part, Israel too has confirmed reinitiating talks to resolve this maritime dispute.
Lebanon and Israel do not share a land border between them, with overlapping maritime boundaries marred by conflict. These conflicts escalated once the sea region in question was found to be rich in energy resources, with Israel discovering two gas fields there, back in 2011. Lebanon though has been unable to tap into these resources in the same vein, which has really stemmed the conflict.
As things stand, both nations have shown positive signs to resolve this long-drawn dispute for good. The UN has described attempts made by both countries to resolve their maritime disagreements as ‘Historic’. It has also expressed hope that once the dispute reaches its conclusive end, everyone in the region – irrespective of their nationality, could reap the rewards of natural resources available there.
