Another boarding in the Gulf of Guinea
M/V Rowayton Eagle has been boarded 200nm south of Accra, Ghana.
The 199x32m bulk carrier, M/V Rowayton Eagle, has been boarded 200nm south of Accra, reports Dryad Global. The incident occurred at 0424 UTC today and the vessel’s last reported position was 02 55.0N 001 56.6E.
The incident is ongoing, and the crew are reported to be assembled in the ship’s citadel. AIS tracking suggests the ship has been adrift since 27th January. The Rowayton Eagle, IMO: 9575216, is registered in the Marshall Islands and was built by Dayang Shipping, China.
This is the 7th offshore incident in the GoG this year and the third offshore boarding. Total incidents of piracy in the GoG last year showed a 12% increase on 2019. Failed approaches increased dramatically in 2020, which may lead to further desperate attempts to board ships, especially when offshore.
Dryad recommends that all vessels transitting the area do so at least 200nm offshore and that they should implement full hardening and maintain high levels of vigilance.
