Siemens Gamesa and GRI Renewables are set to invest more than £260m in offshore wind manufacturing plants in the north east of England.

Both companies receive grant funding from the British government’s offshore wind manufacturing investment support scheme and are planning to create hundreds more jobs building next-generation offshore wind turbines with blades greater than 100 metres.

“With its close proximity to some of the world’s largest offshore wind farms and strong skills base, the Humber region is vitally important for the growth of the British offshore wind industry and is at the heart of our green recovery,” Business and Energy Secretary Kwasi Kwarteng said in a statement.

The UK has more wind capacity installed than any other country, powering 7.5 million homes a year.
