Grimaldi orders six new RoRo vessels
Italian line, the Grimaldi Group, continues to invest in new ships as it places $500m order with Hyundai Mipo Dockyard Co. Ltd.
The Grimaldi group has just signed a multi-million dollar agreement with Hyundai Mipo to build six new RoRo ships at its yard in Ulsan. Each new vessel will have a length of 250 meters, a beam of 38 meters and a deadweight of 45,684 tonnes.
The new ships will be the first of a new class (G5) for the line and are an evolution of the previous G4 vessels. The G5s will be able to transport 4,700 meters of roiling freight, 2,500 CEU and 2,000 TEU, meaning the ships will have the same capacity for rolling freight as the G4s, but twice the container capacity.
In addition to the increased capacity, the G5s will meet NOx levels imposed by Tier III regulation and will have an integrated rudder and propulsion system that will minimize vortex losses and optimise propulsive efficiency. The ships will also have hybrid exhaust-gas cleaning systems to reduce sulphur and particulate emissions.
Gianluca Grimaldi, President of Grimaldi Group SpA, said: “The new series of ro/ro multipurpose G5-class ships were designed to respond even more efficiently to the demand for quality transport services on deep-sea routes, reconciling the needs related to international freight traffic with that of protecting the environment. We are thus taking a further, important step within a path undertaken for years now with the aim of operating on all our main routes with an increasingly young, modern and eco-sustainable fleet”.
