CMA CGM-chartered Port of Gdynia now safe
Crew are safe after attackers were prevented from gaining control of Polish container ship
The CMA CGM-chartered ship the Port of Gdynia is now safe, reports Trade Winds News. The 3,000-teu vessel was attacked in the Gulf of Guinea on Monday — one of a flurry of recent attacks on shipping in the area. Owners Polish Ocean Lines said the crew were able to repel the boarders and the crew are all unharmed and the ship is secure.
A spokesman said: “The incident is over and the crew is safe thanks to their exemplary reactions… Port Gdynia, en route from Lome, Togo, to Bata, Equatorial Guinea, was boarded by pirates. Pirates left the ship without having been able to take control of the vessel and all crew members are safe. We are fully collaborating with local authorities.”
Port Gdynia is one of five containerships that operate on CMA CGM’s Europe-Africa service. Pirate activity has reached plague-like proportions in recent months in the Gulf and the whole area is listed by maritime security consultants, Dryad Global, as having a risk rating of CRITICAL.
