1st-day post-Brexit: Stena Line makes statement
Majority of freight moving well through UK and Irish ports, says Ian Davies of Stena Line.
Ian Davies, the Head of UK port authorities for Stena Line, says: “Currently freight traffic is flowing well through our ports across the UK and Ireland. All government customs and regulatory IT systems are working well with no issues reported…”
The statement was made following widespread media coverage of freight trucks being turned away on New Year’s Day morning at the Port of Holyhead. Hollyhead is the UK’s second busiest ferry port and a vital link between the UK and Ireland.
Freight is lower than pre-Christmas/pre-Brexit levels, says Stena Line, and the company is cautiously optimistic that new post-Brexit procedures are working. However, some vehicles have been turned away because they lacked the correct paperwork, but many were able to return and embark after securing the necessary forms.
