Kenya invests in lakeside Kisumu port
As part of the country’s plan to build a multimodal transport system, Kenya has revamped the port of Kisumu on the shores of Lake Victoria.
Kenya has invested $30m in the refurbishment of the Port of Kisumu. The lakeside port will facilitate the transport of goods from the Port of Mombasa to countries in the interior of the continent, such as Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi, South Sudan, northern Tanzania, and the Democratic Republic of Congo.
“The revival of this port was informed by the need to revamp the economies of the East Africa region and beyond,” said Kenya’s President Uhuru.
The revitalisation of the port included the re-fit of the MV Uhuru and the Kisumu Kenya Shipyard. The yard is expected to build a sister vessel to the Uhuru and a $4.3m marine school has been established to train the mariners of the future.
President Uhuru added that an international airport, a pier and a railway station will make Kisumu Kenya’s frontier for regional trade and logistics and deepen Kenya’s integration within the East African Community trading bloc.
