Record Breaking Number of Container Ships in Southern California Waters
Southern California Port Congestion Hits an All Time High
On September 9, the Marine Exchange of Southern California reported a record breaking 49 containerships are anchored and required to wait outside of Long Beach and Los Angeles ports while having to wait for available berth space.
An additional 15 ships are slated to arrive by the end of the week causing more concern for shipping delays.
The rare congestion at these two main ports on the west coast are the damaging core to transpacific capacity of at least 20-25%.
Port of Los Angeles executive director Gene Seroka stated last month that the issue is, “squeezing 10 lanes of freeway traffic into five lanes.”
