Video: Port of Mocimboa Da Praia wrested from hands of insurgents
Rwandan and Mozambican forces have regained control of the Mozambican port town of Mocimboa Da Praia.
A combined force of Rwandan and Mozambican troops have regained control of Mocimboa Da Praia from insurgent forces affiliated to Islamic State. The northern Mozambican port town was reportedly taken without intense fighting.
The Rwanda Defence Force tweeted on Sunday; “JUST IN: The port city of Mocimboa da Praia, a major stronghold of the insurgency for more than two years has been captured by Rwandan and Mozambican security forces. The city also holds the District Headquarters and Airport.”
An intervention force of about 3,000 troops of the Southern African Development Community (SADC) took no part in the operation as they were still mustering at Pemba, about 400kms to the south of the strategic port town.
