One person has died and two others were injured after a tornado hit New Zealand’s Port of Auckland on Saturday, reports the Guardian. High winds wrought havoc on one of the port’s container depots, toppling shipping containers, tearing off roofs and bringing down trees.

Auckland’s port authorities issued a statement saying that its South Auckland freight hub was hit by a sudden tornado just after 08:30 local time on Saturday.

“One person working on site was killed and two people were injured and have been taken to hospital. The tornado caused significant damage to the site and dislodged multiple containers,” the statement continued.

“We are shocked by this freak event and our thoughts are with the people affected.”
