Tourist Harassing Sea Turtles in Hawaii
Patrols Needed in Hawaii to Stop Sea Turtle Harassment
Officials in Hawaii claim an increase of tourists is harassing sea turtles on a popular North Shore Oahu beach.
It was reported on Friday August 20 that crowds of up to 200 people were forming around turtles at Laniakea Beach Park. Increased patrols were later dispatched and officers were assigned to the area to enforce regulations against approaching the turtles.
As a result of concerns for the safety of sea turtles and endangered Hawaiian monk seals, Governor David Ige issued a warning that violators will be prosecuted.
In Laniakea Beach, tourists expressed they don’t know touching the turtles is prohibited.
