Unionized seafarers at HMM Co., South Korea’s largest shipping company, have voted in favour of staging their first-ever strike after wage negotiations reached a deadlock on Monday, reports the Korea Herald.

Around 92 percent of seafarers who participated in the vote supported the proposed walkout. They now plan to hand in their letters of resignation on Wednesday, although the union said it was still open to a last-minute deal with company management.

Land-based workers are also said to be considering similar industrial action as 95 percent of unionized longshore workers voted against HMM’s proposed 8 percent raise with bonuses of 500 percent.
