HMM about to place order for 12 neo-panamaxes
South Korean firm has $1.4bn to spend on new vessel order.
HMM is about to start the ball rolling on a $1.4bn order for 12 new neo-panamaxes, sources tell TradeWinds. The new ships will be conventionally fuelled and are in the region of 13,000-teu.
Three South Korean yards have been contacted for quotes and a shipyard executive has confirmed HMM’s interest. The new order is part of HMM’s plan to have a fleet cpacity of 1.1m teu by 2025.
The funding for the newbuildings will come from ship finance fund Korea Ocean Business Corp.
According to Alphaliner, HMM is the eighth-largest liner company in the world, with a capacity of 768,600 teu.
