Seafarer Resignations and Looming Strike for HMM
Over 300 Resignations and Strike Threats from Union Members
Last weekend, 453 employees participated in a seafarers’ union strike ballot, with over 90% endorsing action in protest of HMM’s unwillingness to grant large salary increases after a pay freeze between 2011 and 2019.
HMM stands to lose $580M if the strike proceeds.
On August 25 the union said it was willing to extend negotiations until Sept 1.
To date, 317 HMM seafarers have submitted their resignation although the Swiss-Italian carrier MSC was willing to employ all union members.
