Fishing trawler rescued in Irish Sea by RNLI

Howth RNLI launched its all-weather lifeboat in the early hours of this morning, reports Afloat. Pagers sounded at 03.02 am in response to reports of a fishing vessel in distress. The stricken trawler had lost steering and was experiencing difficulty manoeuvring.

The incident happened near North Dublin, south-east of Skerries. The volunteer crew were able to take the trawler in tow and bring her safely to port in Skerries Harbour. Despite their difficulties, the crew were said to be in good spirits.

Howth Lifeboat and crew then returned to their home base and were stood down at 05.45 am. Fred Connolly, Coxswain for Howth Lifeboat, said: “Our volunteer lifeboat crew are always ready to respond to a call for help even in the early hours and we train for situations just like this. We were delighted to be able to quickly locate the fishing vessel, commence the tow and bring the vessel safely back to Skerries”.
