Failed Attempt to Escape Prison by Captain

Offentliggjort

A captain who was captured along with his second-in-command and put in prison over 13 months ago, has tried to escape prison and failed.

Captain Sunil Kumar Nandeshwar, guiding the Wakashio ship through the Indian Ocean on July 25, 2020, was simply trying to get cell phone service. As the ship neared Pointe-d’Esny it grounded on the reef and for the first time, an oil spill occurred in Mauritius.

Believing the Captain would be flight risk, the Port-Louis District Court and the Supreme Court denied him parole.

On August 27, the captain, along with a group of other inmates, used bedsheets as a make-shift rope to flee.  During the escape, some of the inmates decided to return to their cells out of fear of being caught, only to ring the alarm which launched an investigation to name all inmates involved in the failed attempt.

Captain Sunil faces 5 years in prison.
