Indonesia declares salvage of lost submarine “over”
Efforts to salvage the lost Indonesian submarine, KRI Nanggala-402, have been called off, raising many questions as to the condition of the vessel when she went down.
The Jakarta government has called off efforts to salvage the wreck of the submarine, KRI Nanggala, that sank while on exercise near Labuhan Lalang, Bali on 21st April.
The 44-year-old vessel lost contact with the surface while preparing for a torpedo drill, triggering a frantic search to locate her before her oxygen supply ran out.
Tragically, the sub was discoverer later in three parts at a depth of 840 meters — well below her safe operating depth. All 53 crew perished in the accident.
Questions are now being raised as to the condition of the vessel when she went down and why essential re-fits of the submarine were delayed.
Two Indonesian submariners, who prefer to remain anonymous, have told Reuters about a string of mishaps on the Nanggala — including one in 2017 when water entering via the Nanggala‘s snorkel caused her to plummet 84m in waters North of Bali.
