Seafarers petition to save jobs
Mariners facing redundancy have appealed to Maersk shareholders as part of their campaign to persuade the container giant to honour “its principles”.
Dutch seafarers have petitioned Maersk shareholders in a last-ditch effort to save their threatened jobs. In a press release today, Nautilus International, the mariners’ union, said the 24 mariners sent an open letter to Maersk shareholders, appealing for intervention on their behalf.
According to the mariners, “in the Maersk core-values, Maersk states: ‘The basic principle is that people can trust us.’ We therefore ask you to advise Maersk management to stick to its own principles, so we can get back to work again.”
The affected seafarers feel particularly disappointed with Maersk management due to their own willingness to support the company through the pandemic. “Many colleagues at sea are eagerly waiting for relief and we are more than willing to relieve them”, the letter said.
