Singapore Sea Cargo Volume Surges
Sea cargo volume in Singapore gets closer to pre-pandemic levels.
The Straits Times reports about growing sea cargo volumes in Singapore which have almost got to pre-pandemic levels. When compared with the beginning of 2020, November figures stand at 97% of those levels.
Commenting on the way the island nation’s maritime sector has performed, Ong Ye Kung, Transport Minister, remarked that it was a “bright spark during such difficult times”.
He also reiterated his Ministry’s support in digitising and innovating the country’s maritime industry, especially towards growing the available pool of maritime talent.
Singapore’s efforts towards streamlining crew changes (dramatically affected by the pandemic) have been hailed as a role model globally, particularly with the use of telemedicine. A guidebook for this, crafted by the Maritime and Port Authority (MPA) of Singapore, has been circulated to all member states worldwide by the International Maritime Organisation.
The Singaporean government has proactively aided the country’s maritime industry, including a $27 million SGD package that benefits seafarers, shipping enterprises, and industry trainees.
