US ship fires warning shots in Strait of Hormuz
30 warning shots fired after 13 Iranian fast boats come within 150 yards of six US military vessels.
US navy vessels have fired warning shots for the second time within the last month because of what they say were “unsafe and unprofessional” manoeuvres by the naval arm of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGCN).
Pentagon spokesman, John Kirby, said the shots were fired by the USCG cutter, Maui, after Iranian fast boats came within 150 yards of US navy vessels, including the USS Monterey and the USS Georgia.
“It’s significant … and they were acting very aggressively,” he said, adding that the number of Iranian vessels was more than in the recent past. After the second round of warning shots the 13 fast attack craft from the IRGCN broke contact,” he said, ending the encounter.
