Philly Shipyard takes Thordon to court for faulty part

US shipbuilder sues supplier over bad part for Matson vessel.
Philly Shipyard is taking one of its suppliers to court because of issues with parts ordered for a Matson boxship project that has been beleaguered with problems.
The Oslo-listed shipyard wants to recoup $1.2m from Thordon Bearings who supplied bronze liners for a propeller shaft for the 2019-built, 3,600-teu Kaimana Hila.
Philly accused Thordon of breach of contract after the Canadian firm failed to supervise its sub-contractor Precision Roll Grinders (PRG), which is a non-party to the lawsuit.
The shipbuilder said PRG distorted the part, leading to a 23-day delay and additional costs.
The Kaimana Hila and the 3,600-teu Daniel K Inouye were both money losers for Philly and the company has now concentrated on US government contract work, recently winning a $1.2bn contract to build four training vessels for US state maritime academies.
