UK Carrier Strike Group Uses Uninhabited Island as Target
Pacific Ocean Island Used as Target for UK Carrier Strike Group
During a two-day gunnery training exercise, HMS Queen Elizabeth and other Carrier Strike Group warships targeted a deserted tropical island in the Pacific Ocean.
The HMS Queen Elizabeth has transited the Strait of Gibraltar and the Suez Canal since its depart from Portsmouth in May of 2021.
She is currently on a seven-month multinational exercises deployment to the Indo-Pacific alongside allies.
In the Philippine Sea, the Carrier Strike Group joined the Expeditionary Strike Group 7 and the 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit to attack the windswept island of Farallon De Medinilla.
During the two-day training exercise, F-35s provided air support on the first day, before CSG ships arrived offshore the next morning and established communications.
Ashore, US Marines set up mortar positions on the island before radioing in with friendly ships west of the island.
The marines then radioed targets for the CSG’s HMS Kent, HMS Defender, and HNLMS Evertsen to fire from their naval gun.
The exercises are reportedly still ongoing.
