US Navy conducts live-firing and sinking exercise
Exercise off Hawaii concluded with the sinking of a de-commissioned guided missile frigate.
The US Navy has completed its annual live-firing exercise off the coast of Hawaii, concluding with the sinking of the de-commissioned guided-missile frigate USS Ingraham.
Units from Vinson Carrier Strike Group, Submarine Forces Pacific, Marine Expeditionary Forces, and US Army Multi-Domain Task Force all took part in the tightly controlled exercise.
Vessels used in sinking exercises are prepared in strict compliance with Environmental Protection Agency and Navy regulations and must be sunk in at least 1,000 fathoms of water and at least 50 nautical miles from land.
“Lethal combat power was effectively applied to a variety of maritime threats over the last two weeks in a simulated environment as part of the Navy’s Large-Scale Exercise and expertly demonstrated Sunday with live ordnance,” said U.S. 3rd Fleet Commander Vice Adm. Steve Koehler.
“The precise and coordinated strikes from the Navy and our joint teammates resulted in the rapid destruction and sinking of the target ship and exemplify our ability to decisively apply force in the maritime battlespace.”
