MOL inks deal for four new LNG-fuelled car carriers in Japan
New order part of strategy to build 90 LNG-fuelled carriers by 2030.
Mitsui OSK Lines (MOL) has announced that it has ordered four 7,000-ceu LNG-fuelled car carriers from domestic yards, Shin Kurushima Dockyard and Nihon Shipyard — a joint venture between Imabari Shipbuilding and Japan Marine United.
The newbuildings are scheduled for a delivery start in 2024 and are part of a plan to introduce 90 new LNG-fuelled vessels by 2030. The new vessels will, the company says, eliminate SOx emissions and reduce carbon emissions by 25-30%.
“MOL is accelerating its preparations for the launch of environment-friendly vessels using not only LNG fuel but also biofuels, which are reaching the practical application stage, while continuing to research the use of ammonia and other next-generation fuels,” the company said in a statement.
It added: “MOL will make further efforts with the aim of becoming the company of choice for various stakeholders, by delivering a new value zero-emission transport of cars.”
A price for the four new vessels has not been disclosed.
