Calls came in to the Coast Guard shortly before 1am on Friday, September 3rd of reports of a shark attack to a crew member on a fishing vessel off the coast of Grand Isle, Louisiana.

After reporting the urgency of the event as the 64 year old crew member had incurred severe leg injuries, a Coast Guard Air Station New Orleans MH65 Dolphin helicopter medevac was dispatched to the scene.

Crew members on the Moon Glow vessel stated the male victim fell overboard while he was untangling fishing nets that were tangled around the ships propeller. While in the water, he was attacked by a shark which has not been sighted since the event. After rescuing the victim from the water, it appeared his leg was severely damaged which prompted the call for rescue.

Once on the scene, the Coast Guard applied first aid, a tourniquet to the wounded leg and evacuated the crew member immediately to the hospital in New Orleans where he remains in serious condition.
