Notias buys his first tankers
Greek owner’s SteelShips branches out with order for two MR newbuildings.
Nicholas Notias has placed an order for two 50,000-dwt MR product carriers. The vessels are currently under construction at STX Offshore & Shipbuilding in South Korea.
The firm order is for scrubber-ready and LNG propulsion-ready vessels, with delivery scheduled for November 2022. The vessels cost $37m each.
Shipbroking sources told TradeWinds that the low price, eco-design, and early delivery date were instrumental in Notias making the purchase and branching out into tankers.
SteelShips currently owns and operates a single bulker, the 63,000-dwt ultramax Steel Grace, built in 2015.
Formally an attorney with Bear Stearns, Notias has close family ties to Greek shipping families and has been working in the industry since the mid-’90s.
