Long Beach Port Reaches Milestone at Container Terminal
New Heights Reached for Long Beach Port Container Terminal
The Long Beach Container Terminal at Middle Harbor, now one of the world’s most technologically advanced cargo facilities, opened August 23, ushering in a new age of environmentally sustainable operations.
Long Beach Mayor Robert Garcia stated, “The completion of this new terminal is a testament to our city’s continued commitment to sustainability and green technology.”
The port will be equipped with nearly all electric and zero-emissions equipment.
The $1.493 billion project began construction in May 2011. Five years later, Phase 1 was completed, allowing the terminal to operate on 151 acres. Phase 2 was completed in October 2017, adding 191 acres. The terminal’s third and final phase finished in July, adding 300 acres, a container yard, an administration facility, and an on-dock train yard.
All ships calling at the terminal plug into shore power connections while berthed, allowing them to shut down diesel engines and connect to the landside electrical grid.
Trade growth at the facility is creating 14,000 new jobs in Southern California. LBCT also employs unionized workers to operate and maintain the all-electric ship-to-shore cranes.
