Tanger Med Port integral to Morocco’s booming electric car industry
Electronics firm to inaugurate electric vehicles chip production facility in Bouskoura.
Tanger Med is steadily becoming an integral part of Morocco’s booming automotive industry, with rising volumes and investment that have come on the back of economic reform.
STMicroelectronics is the latest company to site a production facility near the port after it won a contract to make electric vehicle chips for Tesla.
Tanger Med is located at the nexus of major shipping routes and Groupe Renault and Groupe PSA have already taken advantage of the Morocco’s excellent sea connections and competitive labour costs.
“STMicroelectronics agreement with Tesla seems to be just the leading edge of a wave of EV chip production in Morocco that could provide a pathway to EV manufacturing in the North African nation,” wrote Prof. Michael Tanchum in a recent article for the Middle East Institute.
“Through its new EV chip production line, Morocco will soon play a greater strategic role in securing Western Conductor supply chains. Given its proven track record as an automotive manufacturing hub, chip production could become the catalyst for the establishment of EV manufacturing in Morocco.”
