Migrant rescue ship appeals for safe port for second time in a month
The packed migrant rescue vessel, Ocean Viking, and its parent NGO SOS Mediterranee have again appealed for permission to disembark 553 survivors after another successful rescue mission.
For the second time in a month, NGO SOS Mediterranee has appealed for a safe port to disembark hundreds of migrants after its rescue vessel Ocean Viking plucked them from the dangerous waters of the Mediterranean. The NGO says the survivors aboard the converted tug are suffering heat stress and are running out of food and water.
The Ocean Viking’s current mission of mercy started on the 24th July when the vessel left Sicily to search for migrant boats. On 31st July she picked up 196 people and later that night in a team effort with Seawatch and Resqship, another 449 migrants were rescued.
Ocean Viking’s Medical Team Leader issued a report saying, “Many are suffering from seasickness today. Some have fainted on our deck due to the heat and the ordeal they lived through.
“Some obtained injuries during the crossing, many suffer from body pain. We continue to assess, treat and monitor patients, but all survivors need to disembark in a place of safety as soon as possible.”
