High-speed ferry goes aground in New York
A New York city high-speed ferry went aground and started taking on water in Brooklyn at the weekend.
US Coast Guard sector New York responded to an emergency call from the 150-ft Seastreak ferry, Commodore, on Saturday after the vessel went aground with 118 passengers and seven crewmembers aboard.
The vessel started taking on water after touching bottom in the Bushwick Inlet in Brooklyn, New York at 16:17 local time. The Coast Guard, New York City Fire Department (FDNY), and New York City Police Department (NYPD) crews responded to the scene.
“The team effort between the Coast Guard and our local first responders including FDNY and NYPD harbor units allowed for the safe evacuation of all passengers,” said Capt. Zeita Merchant, commander of Coast Guard Sector New York.
“The Coast Guard will now work with Seastreak on the investigation and inspection of the vessel to prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future.”
