Seaspan orders another 10 boxships for Zim

Seaspan is continuing to match the boom in the container market with a new round of orders for its customers. Its latest deal is an order for 10 boxships that it will build at a major shipyard for Zim.

Unlike previous construction orders, this agreement is for smaller ships designed to serve niche markets. The contract is valued at $1.05bn and each vessel will have a capacity of 7,000 TEU. Delivery of the dual-fuel LNG ships is scheduled to begin in the fourth quarter of 2023 and continue through 2024.

“We see these modern 7,000 TEUs to be the natural successor to the aging global pool of conventional vessels in the 4,000 to 9,000 TEU range, where relatively little fleet renewal has taken place. We are experiencing strong customer interest for this vessel size.”
